Is discrimination driving changes at the Greater Burlington YMCA?

Coaches for the Midnight Basketball League-- a free program for low-income kids -- allege YMCA staff members told them as non-members they were no longer allowed to fill their water coolers with the filtered water from the fountain because it was "too expensive." Instead they say they were directed to the men's locker room and told to fill up using a shower head.

YMCA officials dispute the allegations. They claim the amount of water needed to fill the program's coolers caused the water fountain to malfunction and shut down. The Y says the showers are better equipped to handle the volume of water needed and released the following statement, "This was a well-intentioned request but we now realize how this could have been perceived as a slight. In retrospect, we should have handled the situation differently."

The community is planning a rally Wednesday outside the Y. Both sides have a meeting scheduled for later in the afternoon.
