Leahy tours Bennington Energizer plant

BENNINGTON, Vt. -

Sen. Patrick Leahy, D-Vermont, says he will seek more federal funding this upcoming session for Vermont's manufacturing industry.

Leahy toured the Energizer plant in Bennington Thursday and called the work being done at the facility some of the best in the world.

He says products that are being developed, like smaller, lighter batteries for use by the military require more funding.

He also doesn't want the Bennington plant to fall victim to the company's global restructuring plan, which saw the St. Albans plant shutter last year, resulting in 165 lost jobs.

"I want this plant to stay and that's why I'm working hard to get some of these federal programs, get the funding necessary for them to use the money but then when they get that money, they've proven that taxpayers are getting their money's worth because they do such a good job," said Leahy.

Leahy did not mention how much additional funding he will be seeking, but said that actually going and seeing the plant and the work being done increases his chances of getting further grants through the appropriations committee.
