Police: Suspicious package in Burlington a hoax

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

An emergency response in the Old North End of Burlington Thursday, where police were called to investigate a suspicious package. But it was just a scare.

Emergency crews were called to the HowardCenter Safe Recovery Center on Clarke Street at about 3:30 p.m. for a report of a suspicious package.

After police and fire crews secured the perimeter, the hazmat team was called.

Burlington Police Chief Michael Schirling explained why the package was suspicious.

"In a drop-off today there is a plastic bag, inside the blue bag that's now on the tree belt, that someone had written the words 'nerve agent' on. So as soon as we arrive and the fire department arrives, we have to eliminate the possibility it's actually a nerve agent," Schirling said.

The hazmat team determined there was no nerve agent in the bag. They say everything is safe and they were cleaning up Thursday evening. But even though it was just a scare, they say they would rather be safe than sorry.

Fire officials say if anyone ever finds a suspicious package they should call authorities and handle the package as little as possible.
