Dig at Colonial battleground turns up artifacts

Posted: Updated:

LAKE GEORGE, N.Y. (AP) - An archaeological dig at a Colonial military site in the southern Adirondacks has turned up thousands of artifacts.

Archaeologist David Starbuck says most of the items found buried at the Lake George Battlefield Park are butchered animal bones, mainly from the cattle that were the main food source for soldiers manning the wilderness outpost in the 18th century.

But the six-week dig that ends Friday has also turned up numerous buttons from the uniforms of some of the thousands of American and British soldiers who were at Lake George during the French and Indian War and the American Revolution.

Many of the artifacts were found in shallow pits excavated just yards from a road that runs through the state-owned park. It's the first dig conducted at the park since 2001.
