Authorities: NY couple planned to abuse Amish girls

HERMON, N.Y. -

Police have released new details about the couple accused of kidnapping two Amish girls in New York's North Country.

St. Lawrence County's District Attorney says, 39-year-old Stephen Howells and 25-year-old Nicole Vaisey of Hermon were taken into custody Friday.

Neighbors say they live on County Route 21 with three kids.

Wednesday night, 7-year-old Delila Miller and her 12-year-old sister Fannie vanished from their family's roadside farm stand in Oswegatchie. Then, Thursday night, police say they were dropped off, unharmed, at a home about 15 miles away.

"Combination of good police work obviously but we need to give credit to the victims," says St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells. "We need to give credit to the girls here. They've been helpful and things that they saw, things that they remember were influential in getting us to this point to quickly."

The couple were arraigned Friday night and are being held without bail until Thursday's hearing. They were not allowed to enter pleas.

Officials say the couple intended to physically harm or sexually abuse the two sisters.
