Last Mile Ride benefits patients and families

Posted: Updated:
RANDOLPH, Vt. - Irene Schafer is ready to ride at the Gifford Medical Center for the 9th annual Last Mile Ride.

"See the bikers off because my son is participating in this with his motorcycle. And if I still had mine I would be riding too," says Irene Schaefer of Randolph.

It's an 80 mile motorcycle and 30 mile bicycle ride around Vermont. Raising funds for Gifford patients who are on their deathbed.

"We support them with food and with travel often, so we have a good basis for doing that because of the Last Mile Ride," says Schaefer.

Nearly 300 riders paid $50 for entry fees and also collected funds from friends, family, and sponsors. This year Last Mile Ride raised $60,000.

"It was founded for the Garden Room, for the people that use the Garden Room," says Kip Stockwell, a motorcycle rider in the Last Mile Ride.

A majority of the money raised at the Last Mile Ride goes to the Garden Room at Gifford Medical Center. The Garden Room is a suite just off of the garden at Gifford, where family members of end-of-life patients can stay and visit.

"The dying patient is in his or her own bedroom, and there's a sitting room and kitchenette attached to that," says Schaefer.

Staff at Gifford say they are looking to add another suite to the Garden Room to fit more family, using funds from the Last Mile Ride.
