Prosecutors: Couple sexually abused kidnapped girls

Posted: Updated:

Prosecutors are now saying that the two Amish sisters kidnapped earlier this week were sexually abused by their alleged captors.

Police say Stephen Howells Jr. and Nicole Vaisey may also have planned to abduct other children. They say the Hermon couple was searching for easy targets when they took the seven and 12-year-old girls.

Prosecutors say, after they snatched them from their family's roadside stand in Oswegatchie, the couple sexually abused them and then let them go.

"They were dropped off by their captors," says St. Lawrence County Sheriff Kevin Wells. "The fact that they were able to verbalize to the investigators different facts about their time in captivity, with those details, instrumental in us to make the arrests."

Both adults are being held without bail on charges of kidnapping with the intent to physically or sexually abuse their victims. They'll be in court Thursday.
