Cleanup at Hartford dry cleaning site backed by court rulings

Posted: Updated:
HARTFORD, Vt. -

The push to clean up a contaminated dry cleaning site in Hartford is being backed by a pair of court rulings.

The attorney general's office says Richard Daniels tried to set up a shell corporation without assets to avoid paying to clean up the site on Hazen Street. A Washington County Superior Court decision ruled that was not allowed. The state has already paid close to $300,000 to tackle hazardous material on the property.

A hearing is slated for November to determine how much of that tab Daniels will be required to cover.

Earlier this year previous owners of the dry cleaner reached a $100,000 settlement to contribute to the cleanup.
