Duxbury man dead after standoff with police

Posted: Updated:
DUXBURY, Vt. - Investigators say a Duxbury man killed himself during a standoff with police.

State police say they got a call to check on Paul Sweetser, 58, Monday. Family members had called police because Sweetser was threatening to harm himself.

When the responding officer was leaving the Clyde Avenue home, police say Sweetser fired a shot at the cop from the front door. That officer was not hit.

Sweetser then barricaded himself inside, and police say there were more shots fired from the home. The SWAT team and negotiators were called to the scene.

"After more than five hours of attempted negotiation with Mr. Sweetser, during which time negotiators were persuading him to come outside," said Captain Paul White with Vermont State Police. "Those negotiations were eventually unsuccessful and force was used to gain entry into the residence at which time we found that the male subject inside had died from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound."

Police say they never fired a single shot.

Neighbors were evacuated and Clyde Avenue was closed for hours, it has since reopened. The home itself is still an active crime scene.
