Driver of overweight big rig nabbed in Vermont

Posted: Updated:

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - The Vermont Department of Motor Vehicles says a trucker carrying part of a giant crane to a state bridge job had too much weight on his rig and too much alcohol in his system.

DMV personnel at a Colchester weigh-in station found a gross weight of nearly 154,000 pounds, 6,000 over the permitted weight. Officials say the rig lacked the required engineering study to determine that the truck wouldn't harm Vermont's roadways.

The 34-year-old driver, Richard Charles Thompson of Delaware City, Delaware, was cited Wednesday for being over the 0.04 percent blood-alcohol limit for commercial drivers.

Thompson faces a $784 fine and the truck's owner, Philadelphia-based Elliott-Lewis Corp., was fined more than $13,000. The company president called the fine excessive. Thompson, who was fired, couldn't be reached Friday.
