ROME, N.Y. (AP) - An off-duty New York police officer had just called it a day when he came across a robbery suspect whom he chased and caught.
It happened Monday afternoon at the intersection of Embargo and James streets in Rome just as Police Officer Michael Uhl had finished his shift.
Police say Uhl was stopped at a traffic light on his way home when he observed a 17-year-old grab the wallet of a bicyclist who had asked the teen for directions.
Police say a brief struggle between the two ensued before the suspect fled.
They say Uhl pursued the suspect on foot and held him until on-duty officers arrived.
The out-of-town bicyclist was not harmed.
The teen was charged with robbery, grand larceny and criminal mischief. His name was withheld.
