GMP and NRG announce energy partnership

ESSEX, Vt. -

Green Mountain Power is touting a new partnership in its efforts to provide green, affordable power.

The company announced it will work with NRG of Texas, one of the country's largest energy companies, on a series of initiatives focused in Rutland.

They include installing electric vehicle charging station and offering tools for consumers to track power usage.

Green Mountain Power CEO Mary Powell says reinforcing the grid by adding solar and other home-based power generating capabilities will help keep the lights on when trees fall on transmission lines.

"You're creating the ability for the communities to act in an island capacity, so to act independent of the regional grid, independent of the rest of the grid," said Powell.

There's no timeline yet for when Vermonters will see the promised changes, but electric vehicle charging stations are expected to arrive first.

Powell says the new partnership allows Green Mountain Power to capitalize on the research and development capabilities of a company as large as NRG.

Editor's note: In a previous version of this story we identified NRG as the company Renewable NRG Systems in Hinesburg. That was incorrect; the company is NRG Energy of Texas.
