NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio says the city's expansion of prekindergarten classes is "historic" and will change the lives of tens of thousands of children.

De Blasio said Wednesday that more than 50,000 children will show up for pre-K on the first day of school Thursday "and everything will be ready to go."

De Blasio's administration announced a snag Tuesday. Nine pre-K centers won't open and 36 others will open later than planned.

Safety and integrity concerns were behind the decision to revoke contracts at the nine centers.

Of the 265 children who were supposed to attend the nine shuttered programs, de Blasio said alternative classrooms have been found for 125.

He said the others will be relocated soon.
