RIVERHEAD, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island mother is freed from jail but barred from seeing her daughter after her 10-month-old son starved to death last year.
A Suffolk County judge sentenced Louisa Givens on Wednesday to time served plus five years of probation in son Kayden's May 2013 death.
Judge John Toomey says she isn't allowed contact with her 3-year-old daughter until September 2022.
Prosecutors say the girl was also malnourished. She's now in foster care.
Givens' lawyer says the 22-year-old Lake Ronkonkoma woman is distraught over the loss of her son.
He says she's fighting through family court to have a part in her daughter's life but realizes that could take time.
Givens pleaded guilty in July to reckless endangerment and attempted manslaughter.
Kayden died of dehydration and malnutrition.
