NEW YORK (AP) - A Staten Island man seriously injured when a tractor-trailer rear-ended his car has been awarded $1.6 million.
Raymond Palma had sued the truck driver and the truck owner, V&E Trucking, in Brooklyn federal court.
He suffered neck, back and shoulder injuries in the Jan. 31, 2011 crash on the Staten Island Expressway.
Jurors awarded Palma $650,000 for past pain and suffering and $950,000 for future pain and suffering following a three-day trial.
The Staten Island Advance says the defendants' lawyer could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday.
Palma's lawyer tells the paper Palma has returned to work as a special education teacher but suffered permanent injuries that limit him physically.
He says Palma was Brooklyn-bound in stop-and-go traffic when the truck plowed into him.
