Vt. Air Guard F-16 hits bird at Fort Drum

Posted: Updated:

A Vermont Air Guard F-16 hit a bird while taking off from Fort Drum in upstate New York.

The jet was taking part in a training exercise Friday. After the bird strike the F-16 circled back to the runway and landed safely. It passed inspection and returned to Burlington. The pilot was not hurt.

Bird strikes with fighter jets are rare. That's because the Guard has a high-tech system to predict bird hazards.
