Celebrating Volunteers: Jeff Berwick

Posted: Updated:

This week, we're recognizing a fire chief who has dedicated thirty years to his department in Peacham.

For Jeff Berwick, 28 of them have been as chief.

Recently, his crew surprised him with a special celebration. He spoke to us about his time with the department.

Peacham Fire Chief Jeff Berwick: "One of the guys said, 'Oh, I need you to look at something out by the truck. We're looking at the truck and the guys open the roll up doors and everybody was standing outside clapping. It was pretty exciting.

Thirty years went by quick. You never stop and really think about it, you just do your job, keep on going and training. It was pretty special to see them there and recognize the time I put in. It was pretty cool.

Because we're small, we don't have the resources some of the other towns do and so it's important to, I think, serve your community. We have to each do our part to help neighbors. I think that's part of life is helping each other through this life and that's the way I choose to do it and enjoy doing it.

I have sixteen (firefighters) right now. About twelve are pretty active, twelve or thirteen are really active and that's our biggest challenge. We're always trying to find new members and younger members to join and daytime coverage is really tough to get people to join and be around during the daytime. That's our biggest challenge.

I look at my thirty years and then I think there's so many other firefighters out there that have volunteered thirty years or more and they don't get the recognition they deserve. All these towns, these members, deserve a huge, huge credit."
