Statehouse Sit-Down: Legalizing marijuana part 1

Posted: Updated:
MONTPELIER, Vt. - A bill to legalize marijuana in Vermont is going nowhere this session according to top Democrats.

The bill was introduced in the Senate last week by Sen. David Zuckerman, P-Chittenden County. Governor Peter Shumlin and other Democrats have indicated they want more time to study the impacts on Vermont and to learn from states that have recently legalized the drug. States like Colorado, where retail sales of pot began a year ago. So far all of the state's moving to legalization have done so through voter referendums. Vermont doesn't have that option, but supporters believe they can win passage through the legislative process.

"I think Vermont is in a position as a deliberative legislative body to do this right and really create a model for other states rather than have further experimentation by states with referendum situations," Sen. Zuckerman said.

Zuckerman concedes the complexity of the legalization issue will require a two year process for potential passage of a bill, and part of that will be to study what is happening in Colorado and Washington. Those states had "high hopes" for their marijuana laws. So how well is it working? Channel 3's Kyle Midura is in Colorado this week. Look for his reports starting Tuesday on the Channel 3 News at 6:00.
