Rights of landlords and tenants in Vermont

Posted: Updated:

When landlords and their tenants get along life can be cozy. But sometimes the relationship can be more of a love-hate situation with slumlords or dead beat tenants.

Laurie Veatch, 75, rented her Plainfield home to Don and Debbie Fountain. Veatch says the Fountains paid half a month's rent and a security deposit, and then left her high and dry. The senior citizen had to get two jobs just to cover her mortgage and taxes while the couple lived in her house for free.

A judge finally gave the Fountains the boot and WCAX discovered the Fountains were involved in at least six similar eviction cases in Chittenden County alone since 2001.

Pam Favreau and Angela Zaikowski were featured in that report. Pam is with Vermont Tenants and Angela is with the legal firm Bennett and Zaikowski which represents landlords.
