Neighbors win case against idling trucks

Posted: Updated:

A nine-year dispute over noise appears to be over in East Hardwick.

The home-based trucking company Shatney and Sons started in 2006 on School Street in East Hardwick. Since then, several neighbors have petitioned for the town to end the noise and pollution coming from the company's trucks idling in the driveway.

Hardwick's zoning administrator first sided with the trucking company, but the complainants went to the Vermont Environmental Court. The court ruled against the trucking company last week.

"They haven't been leaving their trucks home, they've been leaving them somewhere else so they're not violating the zoning ordinance at this point because they're not bringing their trucks home. But if they brought the trucks home then the situation would be they would be in violation and they could be fined," said John Jewett, Hardwick town manager.

Hardwick's zoning administrator is now in charge of the case. Harwick's town manager says the town will be upholding the court's decision.
