Devin Hayes pitched seven innings of scoreless baseball to lead the Spartans to a 4-1 victory over the fourth-seeded Maine-Farmington Beavers in the opening game of the North Atlantic Conference Tournament this morning at Spartan Field.
The Spartans outhit the opposition 11-8 and left just six runners on base in the contest. Nick Swim and Soren Pelz-Walsh led the attack with two hits apiece, while Dan Errico finished 1-for-4 at the plate with his team-leading sixth home run of the season.
With this win, the Spartans improve to 29-10 on the season and have now won 12 of their last 13 games. They will face the winner of game two (No. 3 Thomas vs. No. 2 Husson) tomorrow at 9 am on Spartan Field. The Beavers, meanwhile, drop to 17-19 on the season and will be back in action this afternoon at 3 pm, as they square off with the loser of game two.
The Castleton softball team held Thomas scoreless for the opening three innings of play, but a five-run fourth secured the Terriers a 5-1 victory in the North Atlantic Conference Tournament on Saturday afternoon at Spartan Field.
With the loss, the Spartans are eliminated from the tournament and finish their season at 19-12 (10-2 NAC) overall.
Taylor Paquette suffered her fourth loss of the season after giving up five runs (two earned) in 3.2 innings of work, while Katie Gagne and Kayla Wood combined to toss 2.1 innings of scoreless relief.
Chelsea Grady and Kristi Lawless led the attack with two hits apiece, whereas Gagne went 1-for-2 with a solo home run.
