Spider bite lands Colchester woman in hospital

Posted: Updated:
COLCHESTER, Vt. - A spider bite landed a Colchester woman in the hospital.

UVM Medical Center confirms the 21-year-old spent the night at the hospital after being bitten by a Black Widow spider.

The patient's mother tells WCAX her daughter reached into a bag of grapes and then the spider crawled up her arm and bit her. They caught the spider and brought it, and her daughter, to the Fanny Allen Campus. She was then transferred to the hospital in Burlington.

She underwent a series of shots and is OK. Her health will be monitored for months. The family believes the spider hitched a ride in the grapes from California.  The Shaw's supermarket in Colchester says it is now inspecting the produce in all of its stores and contacting its grape supplier to insure the health and safety of its products. Shaw's is also replacing all the food in the family's refrigerator.
