Surveillance video may show deadly Barre shooting

Posted: Updated:
BARRE, Vt. -

Scores of investigators descended upon the Barre City police department Saturday, where the Vermont State Police mobile command center has been set up to investigate a deadly shooting.

A Vermont social worker was shot and killed leaving the DCF office in Barre Friday afternoon. Lara Sobel was gunned down outside City Place on North Main Street. Police say Jody Herring shot Sobel at close range with a rifle. Witnesses then tackled Herring and held her until police arrived on the scene. Authorities say Herring has had multiple child welfare issues and recently lost custody of her 9-year-old child.

Barre City Police Chief Tim Bombardier tells WCAX News he cannot confirm a link between the Barre City murder Friday night and the three people found dead in Berlin Saturday morning.

Relatives of shooting suspect Jody Herring have been showing up at the Barre City police department Saturday to check in with investigators. A man who identified himself as a cousin tells WCAX News the family is checking in because police fear there may be other victims in the family. The cousin says they have a very large family. And Vermont State Police tell WCAX News they are actively going out to do welfare checks on people possibly related to the shooter.

Bombardier says Jody Herring is being lodged in South Burlington. They have not have talked to her Saturday, and no attempts were made to talk to her last night.

Herring is charged with first-degree murder and will be arraigned Monday.

Now, Vermont State Police may have secured some key evidence in a deadly shooting in Barre. Saturday, merchants in the downtown turned over surveillance video showing the alleged shooter with the gun approaching the building.

Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vermont, issued the following statement Saturday:

"Today is tragic day for Vermont. In the past 24 hours, a public servant was murdered and three other Vermonters were killed in circumstances that are not yet clear. My thoughts and prayers are with the victims' families and friends. As is always the case, I know Vermonters will rally together in the aftermath of this horrible tragedy because that is what we do in a crisis. I have contacted Gov. Shumlin and I am confident there will be a full investigation into what happened and why."
