Kids have a lot of personality which doesn't always come through in their clothing, but it's what inspired one mom to create designs that are full of whimsy and fun.
Kate Bowen and her three little ones -- Kendal, Scarlett and Jack -- may be scattered as they play a game of tag. But they always look pulled together thanks to Petit Peony. That's the kids clothing line that Bowen started last year when she was pregnant with her son. "I actually had seven orders to fulfill when I came home from the hospital," Bowen said.
Bowen, who was in medical sales, started an Etsy shop after family and friends saw her whimsical designs at a party and were hooked. "I have no business designing and making kids clothing," she said. "I was going home for a family party and my cousin and I decided we wanted all of our children to wear coordinating outfits."
Petit Peony originals are now sold in 32 boutiques across the U.S. and online. She's sold over 100-items this summer. Some large runs of the line are made in Massachusetts.
The 100-percent cotton dresses, pants and bow ties are made with joy-filled prints that let kids imaginations fly -- like balloons, mermaids and parades. "I think it's really about dressing kids the way they're supposed to be dressed, not like mini-adults -- sweet innocent and youthful," she said.
Bowen says Petit Peony pieces are practical and made for the everyday. The clothing comes in sizes from six-months to eight-years and range in price from $22 to $78-dollars. "Our mission is to be the most spirited and memorable clothing line on the market," she said.
From special occasions to playing outside, Bowen says the designs hold up. She gets inspiration from her kids. Like a strawberry print tunic for when they went berry picking, and a new organic-farm line coming out, since the girls love farm animals. "It's the balance of appealing and speaking to the children also while they're winning the hearts of their moms and grandmoms," Bowen said.
