CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - A New Hampshire lawmaker says a statewide audit of untested rape kits is needed because no one seems to know how many there are.

Rep. Renny Cushing of Hampton proposes putting the commissioner of the Department of Public Safety in charge of overseeing the inventory and contacting local police departments.

National groups that advocate on behalf of rape victims are campaigning to have all untested rape kits tested and the results fed into national crime and DNA databases.

New Hampshire forensic lab director Tim Pifer said in mid-September there were seven rape kits in his lab that had yet to be tested, noting the state has a "very low backlog." He said he doesn't know if local police departments send every kit to the lab.
