1984 Amtrak accident tested Vt. emergency resources

Posted: Updated:

Back in 1984, Vermont saw a mass casualty Amtrak derailment that tested Vermont resources.

Heavy rains in July of that year overwhelmed a beaver dam, and that washed out a section of track in Williston. The Amtrak Montrealer was heading north and the engineer had no warning. The train had 278 people on board and several cars went down an embankment.

There was a massive response of emergency personnel. Five people were killed in the derailment and another 150 were injured.
