COLCHESTER, Vt. -

Hundreds were eating soup Thursday to help feed the hungry.

The Empty Bowl in Colchester was sold out with 250 people buying tickets to have supper at the Elley Long Center.

Spectrum Youth and Family Services hosted the event. The food was donated by local restaurants. The proceeds support homeless and at-risk teenagers and young adults.

"We feed a lot of kids, we have a drop-in center where 800 kids come during the course of a year to get fed, a lot of them. So we figure it relates very much. And it's not your typical big hotel with a chicken dinner. It's donated soup, donated rolls, we like to keep it pretty simple," said Mark Redmond, Spectrum executive director.

Event-goers grabbed a hand-crafted ceramic bowl and helped themselves to 75 gallons of soup. Organizers expect to raise more than $45,000.
