ESSEX, Vt. -

State leaders are boasting about a school merger in Chittenden County.

Gov. Peter Shumlin says the new Essex-Essex Junction-Westford district will save $1 million over the next five years. Act 46, Vermont's new education law, means homeowners in districts that join forces will get a 10-cent rate decrease on their property taxes.

"I personally believe that Act 46 will be seen five years from now as the best collaboration between Montpelier and local communities, the best partnership to finally achieve the quality for every single student that every Vermonter should get, deserves and, I believe, now can expect," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.

Officials say Act 46 has 11 more school systems in Vermont looking to merge.
