Burlington, Vermont -- March 9, 2005
29-year-old Shane Edgerly of Saint Albans is facing felony charges for unlawful trespass and attempted lewd and lascivious conduct.
"He claims he is innocent and plans on disputing those," says Edgerly's attorney.
Police say he walked into this Champlain College dorm at 56 Summit Street as a student was walking out.
Students who live in the building told police he seemed suspicious, but they assumed he was a maintenance worker.
A female student taking a shower later saw him hiding in the next stall. She screamed at him, and he took off.
Police records show campus security caught Edgerly crawling out of a basement window and questioned him, but let him go. Burlington police later arrested him.
According to police records .. Edgerly admitted he is a voyeur and went into the dorm to see a naked woman. He knew this was a co-ed dorm because he had worked there in the past. He told police -quote- "Being caught is actually a wake-up call."
"We request he stay away from all college campuses and comply with sex offender registry laws," says Julie Slayton, Deputy State's Attorney.
Police records show this is not the first time Edgerly has snuck into a dorm at Champlain College.
He told police that three years ago, he spied a woman getting ready to take a shower. She saw him and screamed. He ran away without getting caught.
A Champlain College spokeswoman would not talk to us on camera, but she says head residents are speaking to students in each of its 18 dorms today to make sure this does not happen again. They are reminding them to never to let any strangers into residence halls, never prop open doors, keep all doors and windows locked, and report any suspicious activity.
Shane Edgerly is also facing a misdemeanor charge for failing to report his new address to the state's sex offender registry. He was convicted five years ago for three counts of lewd and lascivious conduct.
Edgerly has pleaded not guilty to all three new charges. He has been released on bail.
