Red House Inc.

Posted: Updated:

At the Witt house, husband and wife Britt and Matt live simply.

The couple moved here with their two kids from Arizona for an independent lifestyle with more intent.

Getting rid of 80 percent of their stuff they packed into the car and started over in Shelburne.

"When we bought a house with a wood stove we needed something to carry our wood in thats where the wood fetcher came from," said Britt Witt. "I thought we'd be farmers," said Britt.

That didn't pan out, but that wood catcher did. Goods Witt was sewing up to use in their everyday life would one day become the family business.

"We definitely scaled down even further to bare bones to make it in Vermont and stay home with the kids, so not only making things for ourselves and proving resilience in that way I started selling them to provide extra income," said Britt.

The business is called Red House. A fitting name since Britt always wanted to live in a red house with a wood stove. That dream came to fruition in the Green Mountains.

The accessories and home goods from wallets to bins to bags are made from durable and waterproof waxed canvas. The patina changes every time you touch it.
Each one is handmade to order, crafted in a way that's built to last.

"It is the combination of masculine and feminine, it's industrial purposed material that we're taking and making items that masculine applications but then producing clutches and handbags, they're very feminine articles," said Matt Witt.

Red House's biggest sellers are bags and aprons. Items range in price from $32 to $150.

You can find them online and at boutiques across the country. Business has grown 50 percent since they launched last year boxes of goods are going out all the time. But the Witt's are staying grounded keeping it small for now eventually the duo hopes to move to a bigger red house and hire employees.

"All of this stuff, I was making it became the business but it started out for us," said Britt.
