Sanders surges ahead of Clinton in new Iowa poll

Posted: Updated:
DES MOINES, Iowa -

Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is trumpeting the latest poll out of Iowa that shows he has taken a significant lead over Hillary Clinton.

Iowa is a state where Clinton held a double-digit lead for months, but Sanders has seen a big surge in the last couple of weeks. And the CNN poll released Thursday shows him up by eight points.

Clinton has been hammering away at Sanders' platform in recent days and suggesting he could not win the general election. But Sanders says the head-to-head matchup polls show otherwise.

"And here is my favorite. Deals with my good friend Donald Trump. Secretary Clinton defeats Trump by nine points. We beat him by 23 points," Sanders said.

As for voters nationwide, the Real Clear Politics average of recent polls still has Clinton up by double digits, but Sanders hopes strong showings in Iowa and New Hampshire will give him fresh momentum in other states.
