This is a spectacular garden with perennials, and shrubs and trees. They have everything!
This is the Bressingham Garden at the Massachusetts Horticultural Society's Elm Bank headquarters. It was designed by a famous English gardener designer, Adrian Bloom.
And he designed this garden with the idea of making it low maintenance and beautiful. If you look at this garden you'll see that the birches are huge; they're mature. They're a nice backdrop for some of the lower shrubs like the viburnums, arborvitae and some ornamental grasses. If you drop down a little farther you have some low-maintenance perennials such as rudbeckia, geranium and bee balm. All of this is designed in such a way that you don't have to work so hard.
It's a beautiful garden and they have a lot of mature specimen shrubs planted here. They have smoke bushes that are in full smoking flower. And of course they have a beautiful hydrangea. This one is called "Quickfire," and is a new variety of hydrangea. The panacle hydrangeas have a lot of new varieties, too. We've talked about 'Pinky Winky' before. "Quickfire" is another beautiful one. They also have a beautiful mature butterfly bush that's as big as a Goddess!
It's a gorgeous garden. So you can see how they've mixed and matched different trees, shrubs and perennials, so that over time plants fill in. They're not as much work, requiring less mulching and weeding and yet you still have that beauty that you'd really like to have in a perennial border.
