Governor invites PayPal to Vermont

MONTPELIER, Vt. -

Could PayPal come to Vermont?

Gov. Peter Shumlin, D-Vermont, wrote to the online-payment giant's CEO urging the company to expand here. The request comes after PayPal canceled plans to expand in North Carolina, citing that state's new law that some deem discriminatory against the LGBT community.

Shumlin touted Vermont's burgeoning tech sector and history of protecting people's rights.

"We're proud that you're standing up to bigotry, to hatred and discrimination. And there's no state in America that has a better record of standing up for the civil rights of all people than Vermont. We invented civil unions. They have 400 employees that they're trying to locate and what better place than Vermont," said Shumlin.

The governor also noted PayPal's CEO Dan Schulman is a graduate of Middlebury College.
