How the hit show 'Hamilton' is inspiring Vt. students

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's the hottest ticket on Broadway; "Hamilton" is about one of the Founding Fathers, Alexander Hamilton. And its unique sounds are reaching students at Burlington High School in Mr. Hagan's U.S. history classroom.

"There is definitely a celebrity in the room and that's Alexander Hamilton," Dan Hagan said.

Hagan has been teaching AP U.S. History for two years and he says this year it's nearly impossible to avoid discussing the icon.

"I call them Hamilton landmines. I'll be minding my own business, walking our way through the curriculum, and I'll just say something unknowingly to me that's in the musical and three or four people explode," Hagan said.

Three of those culprits are juniors Khadija Bangoura, Rebecca Berlind and Jeremy Brotz. The music speaks to them because it's not presented in the classic Broadway show tunes manner.

"Using the story of the revolution told through the music of the revolution, which is hip-hop, is really, it's revolutionary you could say," Brotz said.

And it's helping them learn, as well.

"Mr. Hagan asked about if someone in the class had known the French general who aided the colonies in the American Revolution, and I knew that it was Lafayette from the musical," Berlind said.

Students in AP history aren't the only ones talking about Hamilton the musical, Hagan tells us that many other kids who are not in his class have come up to asking if they can learn about Hamilton, as well.

"It's clear from this year that there is a huge demand for more knowledge and content about Hamilton," Hagan said.

"Through listening to Hamilton I realized how cool history can be," Bangoura said.

And this realization has helped students with history beyond Hamilton's Federalist period.

"Having such a good grasp on that content through something that is fun to me definitely makes making connections to other eras easier," Berlind said.

If only all music could be informative and fun at the same time.
