Vt. Lego team competes for national award

BURLINGTON, Vt. -

A South Burlington Lego League team was recently selected to go to Washington, D.C.

The Green Mountain Gears team made it to the semifinals in a June contest for the first LEGO League Global Innovation Award. They were chosen for an app they designed called "Sorta Scrappy," which focused on properly disposing of waste.

While they didn't make it to the finals, participants said they were excited by the opportunity.

"It's a tilt-controlled up. So, you tilt the screen and you try to catch falling trash items. And if it's not a trash item, if it's a recycling item or compostable item, you push it into that correct bin by tilting the screen," explained Luke Fitzgerald, one of the team members.

The Green Mountain Gears team has also competed in the Sports for the Mind robotics competition at Norwich University over the three years it has been held in Vermont.
