Man's Lake Champlain drone-fishing video goes viral

Posted: Updated:

David Freiheit started last Friday with a plan to do something he knew was outrageous.

"We're going to go fishing with a drone," he says in a video posted on YouTube. "But we're not using worms and we're not on a little pond. We're on Lake Champlain, and we are going to be trolling... with a jitterbug!"

Throwing the lure and then starting up his drone. Minutes later...

"Oh, my gosh!" he exclaims. "Did you just see the fish? I got a fish! Oh, my gosh-- oh, my gosh. Holy crabapples!"

He pilots the drone back to shore, the hooked fish still jumping on the line!

"Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh! We've got it!" he says.

You might say, he's a bit excited about it.

"The fish is on the end!" he says.

He reels his catch in the rest of the way by hand.

"Holy cows! Holy cows, I did not think this was going to work!" Freiheit says.

His prize-- a big bass!

"Oh, my gosh. This is a monster!" he says.

He sprints up to his wife and kids to show off his catch.

"Look! I have one I caught! With the drone! It's a huge freaking bass!" he tells them.

Freiheit told us by phone his family wasn't quite as impressed.

"She was definitely not as excited as I was. For a second, she had thought something horrible had happened, but she was with the kids, so it couldn't have been that bad," he said. "I don't think anybody will ever be as excited as I was."

Once the photos had been taken as proof, Freiheit raced the bass back to the lake.

"This is the craziest thing that's ever happened, actually!" he says in the video. "Didn't think anything was going to work, let alone a fish, but this is the biggest fish of my life."

And he releases the very confused fish back into the water to swim away and stay far from buzzing drones in the future.

Although Freiheit tells us he might not try this again for fear of another fish pulling the drone in.

"I don't want to push my luck because it's good that it didn't pull the drone directly into the water," he told WCAX News.

So now he's left wondering what's next. "Well, I don't know what to do with the rest of my life."

But until he figures it out, he has one heck of a fish story to tell.

Freiheit tells us he already filed an application to Guinness World Records trying to get them to do a "biggest fish caught by drone." If they do, he says he could be the record holder for a short period of time. In the meantime, the rest of us just get to rewatch that video. Have a look:
