NEW YORK (AP) - A tropical storm warning has been issued for New York City, Long Island and parts of Westchester County.
The alert went into effect at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The National Weather Service says the warning is issued 36 hours ahead of potential tropical storm-force winds.
On Friday, the city banned swimming at its beaches on Sunday because of possible dangerous riptides.
The area could get heavy rains, strong winds and flooding in some coastal areas from late Saturday through Wednesday.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo activated New York's Emergency Operations Center to begin preparations.
Hermine (her-MEEN), now a tropical storm, could strengthen back into a hurricane by Monday morning off the Maryland-Delaware coast before weakening again as it moves north.
