Vermont State Police are investigating what they call a suspicious fire of the covered bridge on Swamp Road.

It was reported Saturday afternoon and when crews arrived it was fully engulfed in flames.

"There were no lightning strikes, and there isn't electricity here, so all I can assume is that it probably was arson, but we've got state police investigators here plus the Addison county investigators, so they're going to go through and check," said Chief Dennis Rheaume, Cornwall Fire Department.

The chief says flames spread from the bridge, north to some swamp land, burning about 15 acres.

State Police says the route will likely be closed most the evening.

A viewer tweeted us the following video of the blaze.

According to the Vermont State Archives, the bridge was built in 1865.
