Scott, Minter on choosing next Vermont justice

Posted: Updated:

The candidates for governor met in a forum Thursday in Montpelier.

It will fall to Vermont's next governor to replace retiring Vermont Supreme Court John Dooley. While not as politically charged a decision as appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court, the decision could have a lasting impact on the legal landscape of Vermont.

After the forum, we asked for their thoughts on choosing Dooley's replacement.

"Obviously, I will be looking for a justice who is fair and impartial, who has integrity, who has qualifications and who really wants to be in this next job," Democratic candidate Sue Minter said.

"Well, I think you have to have judicial temperament, obviously. You have to be fair and balanced, somebody that doesn't, isn't swayed one way or another. I think objectivity is really, really important," Republican candidate Phil Scott said.

Neither candidate shared any names of potential nominees for the job. Both said they would be guided by a nominating process before making a selection.
