Woman claims catamount chased her in Springfield

Posted: Updated:

A woman claims she saw a catamount in downtown Springfield.

Saturday, Springfield Police got a call about a large cat chasing a woman in the parking lot of the Family Dollar store. When police arrived, they showed the woman pictures of different kinds of cats and she immediately picked out the extinct catamount.

Police investigated but could not find any evidence to support the sighting.

"I looked for a half-hour, 45 minutes, came back throughout the evening just hoping to catch eyeballs or something prowling. There were two dogs in the area just laying lazily on the porch where she said it ran by. Didn't seem too indicative that they were too excited of a large cat," Springfield Police Det. Anthony Moriglioni said.

Whatever it was, it was last seen heading up Pearl Street.

The last catamount killed in Vermont was in 1881.  Federal officials and the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department believe the Catamount became extinct in the 1930s.
