Vermont hunters gear up for deer season

Posted: Updated:
BURLINGTON, Vt. -

Hunters are gearing up for the most popular hunting period of the year.

A week from Saturday they'll be able to hit the woods for rifle deer season. The season runs from November 12 - 27.

Hunters are allowed to take one buck. The deer population is estimated at 145,000 right now and with last year's mild winter, officials say they're hearing from people who are definitely seeing them.

"I think people are seeing a tremendous amount of deer this year. We've had two mild winters, almost non-event winters in a row. People are seeing a lot of deer. We've issued quite a few doe permits this year. People are quite excited about that. Those two things always translate into a lot of early thinking about deer hunting," said Col. Jason Batchelder. Vt. Fish & Wildlife.

The young hunters will be able to get out into the woods early. Youth Deer Weekend is this weekend on Saturday and Sunday.

Also a reminder from Fish & Wildlife to please wear orange if you're out in the woods to make sure you stay safe.
