After three years as an exhibition, volleyball made its debut as a varsity sport this fall. Thirteen schools fielded girls teams, six boys teams, and in the end, the same two schools, CVU and Essex, were left standing.
St. Michael's College served as the host site for the championship matches this Saturday and it saw CVU sweep past it's rival to win both crowns.
The girls took the court first. Essex, the top seed and undefeated in the regular season, took the opening set 25-17. CVU rallied, winning the next two sets 26-24 and 25-22 to move one set away from victory. The Hornets answered back to take the fourth set 25-22, but CVU took the fifth and final set 15-10 to win the first varsity girls volleyball championship.
In the boys final, the seeds were reversed, CVU the top seed, Essex second, but the match started the same, with the Hornets taking the first set 25-17. This time, CVU took another tight second set 25-23 and didn't look back. The Redhawks won the third set 25-18, and out-lasted Essex in the fourth set 25-23 to win the inaugural boys state crown.
