Logan Cota's touchdown run with just over two minutes to go in the fourth quarter was the difference on Saturday as second seed Bellows Falls knocked off top seed, Burr and Burton, 20-14 to capture the Division 2 football state championship. It's the Bulldogs first loss of the season.
"It means the world," Cota said. "At the beginning of the season we just wanted to get back here and play them again. We know we could do it. We played great today."
The Terriers scored first on the opening kickoff. Jacob Streeter took the kick back 86 yards to the endzone. Bellows Falls had a 6-0 lead after the first quarter.
Burr and Burton turned the ball over twice in the red zone during the first half of play. However, just before halftime, Bulldogs quarterback, Griffin Stalcup found Jay McCoy for a touchdown and a 7-6 halftime lead.
Bellows Falls went back in front 14-7 early in the third quarter on a Jahyde Bullard 67 yard touchdown run.
Stalcup answered with a 35 yards touchdown run tying the game up at 14 after three quarters. Burr and Burton had one last chance in the final seconds to tie of take a lead, but Brendan Kendall intercepted Stalcup's pass on 4th and 14 from the Terriers 30 yard line.
"We had to make the stop," Kendall said. "That's all I was thinking about. We had to do something. We had to pull it off. We had to make the stop. We had to come down with it. We ended up doing it and became number one.
Bellows Falls had lost its last four games to Burr and Burton including last year's state final.
