Friday Evening Flowers

WILLISTON Vt. -

Studies show that giving and receiving flowers has an immediate impact on personal happiness, and gives a long-lasting boost to a persons mood. Two Vermont women want that happiness to last all year round with paper flowers that are Made in Vermont.

A beautiful Virginia Rose -- full of life now, but eventually it will die.

But not this one.

From paper to petals, Sharon McGreevy and Jenny Hermenze make paper blooms for their business Friday Evening Flowers. "Not many people don't love flowers," McGreevy said.

These stems give fresh-cut ones a run for their money, and last way longer.  The duo uses tissue and crepe papers to bring each one to life. "It's ecstasy -- the color and shapes -- and there's a lot of life around them," Hermenze said.

It's almost like magic watching something flat turn into a flower filled with life. "We do try to be really accurate. We put a lot of effort into being accurate," McGreevy said. The pistol, stamen, sepal and leaves -- no detail is forgotten.

From poppies and peonies to ferns and fiddle heads, Friday Evening Flowers makes just about anything they can think of. These two friends came up with the idea after Hermenze found a book about paper flowers. "We were having coffee and she said, 'I came across this book -- I really love it.' And I said, 'I love that book -- it's a beautiful book.' And she said, 'I think we should do a business - okay,'" McGreevy said.

The two got busy and have now been selling flowers for a year. "Practice, practice, and studying the flowers. I have learned so much about flowers," McGreevy said.

"They are dumb founded, and so are we," Hermenze said.

"People really love them," Hermenze added.

Their latest venture has them saying 'I do.' Friday Evening Flowers makes wedding bouquets and even will re-create your bouquet in paper form. This is McGreevy's from her wedding 31 years ago.  "It's wonderful light brings back some wonderful memories," McGreevy

The blooms range in price from $12 to hundreds.

"I almost get as much of a thrill out of the paper flower as a real flower," Hermenze said.

Bringing Made in Vermont beauty into your life year round.
