Cow, moose form unlikely friendship

SHELDON, Vt. -

Sheldon resident Tim Abbott is used to seeing his three cows hanging out in the pasture behind his house, but on Saturday, he noticed a fourth creature had joined the herd.

"It was interesting. We drove into the yard after bringing our daughter to the airport, and at about 7:00 this morning there stood a moose with the three cows just calm as could be," says Abbott.

Abbott says it's the first time he's ever seen a moose on his 25-acre farm, and it appeared to be a first for his cows as well. Two of his cows stayed at a curious distance from the moose, but one cow took a particular liking to it.

"Moose just seems to be hanging out and having a good time, so she's just out here eating grass, and she's been sleeping with the cows, and when the cows get up and eat she gets up as well. She hasn't eaten any of the hay that the cows are eating, which is interesting," says Abbott.

The odd pair eventually broke up when the cow headed to the barn and the moose remained in the pasture. Abbott says it was a special day to see their long-legged visitor.

"Very docile. Very calm, and we had fish and wildlife out to make sure that there wasn't anything wrong with her. They said she looked perfectly healthy, and we'll let her stay as long as she wants to stay I guess," says Abbott.
