Allegiant to leave BTV

Posted: Updated:
SOUTH BURLINGTON, Vt. -

It's Bon voyage to a discount airline at the Burlington Airport.

Allegiant Airlines will stop its twice-a-week flights to Orlando in March. The move comes as the airport's major airlines agreed to a new five-year contract, but Allegiant did not.

The airport says Allegiant's flights represent only two percent of passengers into and out of the Burlington airport, but told us they will try to see if there are other ways to bring Allegiant or another low-cost airline back.

"The problem is there isn't enough of it and Burlington isn't cheap to be at, so everything they do, you don't pay as much, but the airport doesn't get much either. So we're not poised for that, but that doesn't mean we're not done," said Gene Richards with Burlington International Airport.

In a statement the airline said there was "simply not enough demand at this time to support the route."

Allegiant already flies out of Plattsburgh, and another discount airline, Spirit, also started service to Orlando from Plattsburgh this month.
