Local grower fills greenhouse with popular Christmas plant

Posted: Updated:

Now that the Thanksgiving holiday is in the books, it's time to look forward to the next big season and one local grower is more than ready.

It is a visual feast. Poinsettias for as far as the eye can see. There is more than 1 quarter million square feet of greenhouse space full of these Christmas plants.

"We start the crop in July, that's when we receive the first of our cuttings. We grow about 42,000 poinsettias for the next four weeks. So, it's pretty amazing how many plants we actually sell," said Chris Conant, from Claussen's.

Claussen's not only sells their plants to the public, they also supply florists, garden centers, school groups and churches around the state. According to Conant, it is a crop worth hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Conant says they grow 17 different varieties of poinsettia but it's the Prestige Red that is the top seller.

But every year there is something new.

The plants need to stay warm while they grow, around 70 degrees. And they need plenty of fertilizer and light. This year Mother Nature cooperated.

"The amount of light we had this summer and fall has provided us has been amazing and so I really feel like this is probably one of our better crops in the 45 years we have been growing poinsettias its great," said Conant.

And he expects almost all of these plants will be sold within the next four weeks. Then it will be time to plan for next year's crop.
