BENNINGTON, Vt. (AP) - Vermont officials say truck drivers will now have to put snow chains on their tires before traveling state Route 9 in snowy and icy conditions.
The Bennington Banner reports state Agency of Transportation officials say two new designated pull-off areas in Bennington and Wilmington will allow truckers to pull over and apply the chains so they have better control as they drive over the mountain. The new "chain-up" areas have space for six tractor-trailers.
The state will require snow chains during winter weather if vehicles weigh 26,000 pounds or more.
The requirements are aimed at improving safety on Route 9, a winding route connecting Bennington with Brattleboro that has steep grades and windy turns.
Officials say the requirements will be enforced by police and the VTrans DMV enforcement unit.
