New lawmakers head to Concord for State House orientation

Posted: Updated:

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - It's the first day of school for New Hampshire's newest lawmakers.

Newly elected representatives and senators are scheduled to attend orientation at the State House on Tuesday and Wednesday. The days are designed to teach new lawmakers the rules of each chamber, how to navigate the building and what is takes to be an effective legislator.

Nine of the Senate's 24 members are new. A consolidated tally of new House members is not available, but the chamber has 400 members. Each member is elected for a two-year term.

The House's official "Organization Day," when a speaker is chosen, falls on Dec. 7. The legislative session begins Jan. 4.
