GMP, GlobalFoundries team up for new solar project

ESSEX JUNCTION, Vt. -

A new solar project is in the works in Vermont.

Green Mountain Power and GlobalFoundries announced their new solar facility is now generating electricity in Williston. Owned by Green Mountain and located on GlobalFoundries' land in that town, the facility is expected to generate energy for more than 1,100 homes. Global officials say clean energy is important to their company.

"For us, this was a good economic deal. It's a very, very small part of the power that we use here that we'll be taking from there. It was much more important for us to come up with a partnership, a win/win where we could continue to grow solar in Vermont, continue to learn from it, continue to have clean energy and all win in the process," said Janette Bombardier, GlobalFoundries.

A national solar test center is located next to the new solar facility in Williston. It's one of five in the U.S collecting data on the effectiveness of operating in climates with harsh winters, significant precipitation and dramatic weather changes. Officials plan to share data from the new facility with those researchers.
